Twelve days after the whole censorship thing, and the porn-bots still are in charge of the place.

Great work @staff hope it was worthy.

If you’re leaving Tumblr for good, then cancel your account on your way out.

Sounds drastic. Especially for content creators who may still need Tumblr for commissions while they find an alternative.

If you can swing it, here’s why:

I suspect that the December 17th deadline is so that Verizon/Yahoo can clean house and make Tumblr appealing to investors. This is a Q4/Q1 fire sale kind of thing. It makes a certain amount of business sense to make this change. Human-lead content curation (e.g. separating the CP from the legit) is expensive and time-consuming. I doubt they have the money for it. They already sold off Flickr. As a long-time Flickr pro user, I’m not pleased by the change and increase in pro account price, but I get it.

Investors are looking for a user base. User base is a prime attraction for investment or buy-out for a social media platform or application (I speak from experience as a co-founder of Rhinobird.tv).

Every account that is cancelled will be one less account in Tumblr’s user base for their pitch. I assume that there are millions of accounts with some percentage simply being abandoned accounts that haven’t been used in years. So cancelling one’s account on the way out the door won’t really matter unless the number of cancelled accounts reaches several hundred thousand at least.

If you decide to leave and cancel, then I also recommend sending a polite message to Tumblr staff, or tweet to the account about why you are leaving.

Finally, using Twitter to voice your concerns and thoughts about this issue will increase its visibility. They ain’t gonna like that. Media outlets that cater to tech entrepreneurs, and Silicon Valley types are going to be all over this.

I never ask for reblogs, but I will this one time.

Reblog!!!

Well said. Saving the best of my stuff and then this will be shut down. Giving it 7 days then I will delete this account. All of my 33000 followers should do the same.

Here’s your sign.

Always about the stock price

RE BLOG

Save The Blogs!

Okay, folks. So. Tumblr’s jumped the shark in a big way, and I’m not even just talking about indiscriminately blocking all “adult” content on a platform that IS, in fact, primarily 18+.

Many blogs, like the wonderful @blackkatmagic , that are not especially NSFW have vanished.

(And I for one LIKE being able to go to curated porn blogs run by actual people and have a chance of finding stuff to my taste, it was one of the things that kept me on this hellsite, but that’s another issue entirely.)

I know lots of people are talking about migrating, but none of us are sure to where yet. Pillowfort seems to be an option, some people are talking about Twitter. But for now, it’s a mess, and even if we knew where we were going, it’s often a huge process, and a lot of us have stuff on tumblr that ONLY exists there.

One possible quick solution to save your blogs, both NSFW and personal, is to import it to WordPress. I found this solution through from frantic googling on how to save an entire blog, text posts an all. There are several apps for downloading all the pictures from a tumblr, (Plently for Windows, but only a few paid ones for mac, of which Tumbelog Picture Downloader is working for me so far) but this is the only solution I’ve seen so far that allows you to save EVERYTHING. I downloaded my NSFW blog in like 10 min. My regular blog, which is significantly larger, is in the process of importing, but I don’t anticipate any problems. I will, of course, update you if I have any.

This tutorial I found worked really easily. http://quickguide (.) tumblr (.) com/post/39780378703/backing-up-your-tumblr-blog-to-wordpress

I put parenthesis around the .’s like we’re back in FF-Hell, just in case tumblr’s new thing about outgoing links kicks in. You know what to do.

To break it down, just in case:

Sign up for a WordPress.com account at wordpress (.) com/start

You’ll have to create an account, with your email, a username, and a password. They should send you a confirmation email immediately, check it, activate it, and you’re good to go.

On the site, it will ask you for a site name. That page asks you a bunch of other information too, but you only have to fill out the site name.

image

Then you have to give your site a URL. If you’re lucky, your tumblr URL is still available, if not you’ll have to come up with another one, sorry.

image

It will tell you if that option is still available for free.

image

Then it will ask you to pick a plan. Free is really good enough, I swear.

image

Now you’re set up! You can import your tumblr!

The only differences from the linked tutorial are that the Import button is now on the first level menu, not in tools.

image

Hit Import, then you have to follow the link for “other importers”  at the bottom, to find the option for Tumblr.

image
image

Then you’ll have to sign in with tumblr, using your normal tumblr credentials. You’ll be redirected there automatically.

You’ll have to allow Wordpress permissions on your blog.

image

Then your blogs, including all your sideblogs, will show up in wordpress.

image

Hit import, wait a WHILE depending on the size of your blog, and you’re done!

ALSO!!

I made my NSFW blog private for now, since I don’t know WP’s policy on NSFW.

This means that to access it, someone has to have an account and request access. But hey, part of our problem on this hellsite has been people going places they aren’t wanted, so I don’t personally see this as a bad thing. They can send a request from the landing site on your blog, you get an email, click a link in the email, and PRESTO, they have access.

To make it private, go to Settings > Reading > Site Visibility. Go back and check, it took me changing the setting twice for it to actually stick.

tl;dr, you can import your entire blog to wordpress in just a few steps.

I’m going to tag the hell out of this, in no particular order. PLEASE reblog this and spread the word so people know it’s an option. If you’re having trouble, PM me, and I’m happy to help.

I have been testing the accuracy of Tumblr’s explicit photo algorithms. Even when you request review the system can not render an accurate result. Needless to say, the algorithms are highly inaccurate and ineffective. I am considering leaving Tumblr altogether because of my frustration. All hail Tumblr’s corporate masters at Verizon. You destroyed a great site. Great job 👍🏼

Real talk, though, because it needs to be said: as much as we all joke that porn was the only good thing this place had left, the reality is that it being the only place where one could regularly engage with and promote sexual content being gone is really not understanding at all what makes this place special. I mean we all joke about “horny on main” and all that, but the reality is that for a lot of the LGTBQ+ community, particularly younger members still discovering themselves and members in extremely homophobic environments where most media sites were banned (but Tumblr wasn’t even considered important enough to be), this was a bastion of information and self-expression. For a lot of artists too, this was a great place to come and post NSFW work and get traction that became Patreon pages that became honest jobs.

The problem with “family friendly” social media is that more often than not, the ones hit  the most by the whole family friendly nonsense are marginalized groups that have no vehicles to express themselves. Stuff like YouTube consistently bans or flags simple content featuring something as innocuous as two men kissing as “adult” content and makes it hard for LGBTQ+ content creators to compete with their non-queer peers for a lot of those reasons.

The ultimate problem isn’t even that banning of NSFW content, it’s the general mess surrounding it and unintended consequences to these groups. For MONTHS Tumblr has had a huge problem with porn spam bots and outright child pornography, and for MONTHS the majority of the userbase has been in general consensus that both of these things needed to stop. Tumblr did NOTHING. Absolutely nothing. When Apple finally removed their app from the store, SPECIFICALLY because of the child pornography, Tumblr decided to do what any rich corporation owning a social media site with zero understanding of what makes it popular would do, and decided that the best course of action was to eat itself like an Ouroboros. Rather than admit that they have done an absolutely shit job at keeping pedophiles off this website and rather than hiring the necessary staff to carefully moderate content, they decided to loose a poorly programmed bot that literally deleted perfectly SFW blogs with thousands of followers, and rather than properly handling moderation, they decided that it was best to simply go the lazy route and block anything even remotely NSFW.

They run this site in the worst way possible, and I don’t understand how @support or @staff or their completely oblivious “CEO” plans to keep this sinking ship alive.

Amen…

A memo from me.

What happened is this: recently, the Tumblr app was removed from Apple’s App Store as photos depicting child porn were found on its site. In an effort to kill the infestation, Tumblr has now set fire to the whole village.

Tumblr is relying on bots to flag posts containing any offensive material, and as you can guess, these bots are already running amok and flagging just about everything now. I took a quick look at my own stuff, and saw that hundreds and hundreds of my posts have been erroneously flagged. So far, I haven’t received a single notification (via email or otherwise) about this activity, so I’m not entirely sure what to do at this point. Are they expecting me to plough through my enormous archive and report every incorrectly flagged post myself, when I’ve been trying to get them to fix my incorrectly flagged post on Yokai monsters for two weeks now? Will the flagged posts be deleted if I don’t undertake action?

The post you’re reading now has been flagged too by the way:

image

But then, this has been in the air for a while now, hasn’t it, ever since Tumblr was clumsily messing around with their Safe Mode setting back then. And last year, a similar thing happened, when many of my posts suddenly were incorrectly flagged as sensitive and I had to try and work it out with the Helpdesk to fix them (some were never fixed). The bots were incompetent then, and obviously they are just as incompetent now, when things have gotten serious.

What does this mean for Tales from Weirdland? Well, you have to realize I’m Dutch, and I grew up in a free, easygoing climate, where violence, racism, homophobia, corporate greed, animal cruelty, pollution, and war were regarded as more offensive than a bit of nudity, so this new policy is close to crazy moon man language to me. I don’t often post nudity, but it happens: Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot have both posed nude, French magazine LA VIE PARISIENNE occasionally featured illustrations showing—gasp!—female nipples, displaying a more casual attitude to them in the 1920s than Tumblr one hundred years later, and even some sci-fi art might contain nudity, something that I believe hasn’t corrupted me or any of my 60,000 followers so far. But hey.

Ultimately it’s up to Tumblr though. Their community-destroying policy will be enforced on December 17th, so I’ll just see what happens then. I’ll resume posting later on this week, but warily, as I have enough flagged posts as it is.

I’m not going to limp on a leash in a 19th-century corset though, that’s for sure.

SIGN THIS PETITION TO KEEP ADULT CONTENT

https://www.change.org/p/tumblr-com-allow-nsfw-content-on-tumblr

Tumblr wants to take away all adult content on the platform, abandoning a large majority of it’s userbase which uses the site for this exact matter. Please sign the above petition if you would like to keep tumblr the way it is. They need to be shown that they will lose a HUGE amount of their traffic if they’re too carry this through.

PLEASE REBLOG AND SHARE

I will say that since I signed and reblogged this originally like, an hour ago, the number of signatures has nearly doubled. So keep spreading it around, people.

REBLOG IF YOU’RE A NSFW BLOG

We all have seen the Tumblr communicate about forbidding nsfw blogs or those which have “adult” posts.

They think it won’t cause them any harm, but we are a really big part of the community. Let’s act and tell the staff that tumblr will slowly die after taking this decision. Follow these steps:

  • First of all, REBLOG THIS POST, so any NSFW blog can post and see it.
  • Give tumblr the worst mark at the App Store or Play Store
  • Write a negative comment about how they’re banning accounts and censoring the freedom of expression.
  • Purpose as a comment below a new site to move as a NSFW community.

If you do this before the 17 of December, we can change this decision. Let’s make the staff hear us. Make tumblr great again, a free place for free minds and free content!!

Personally, I enjoyed every single moment here at tumblr, and I appreciate everyone of my followers and blogs that I follow. If they delete my account… It was a pleasure to know you all. But we can still change this!!!

Regards!

Re-blog the fuck outta this people!!!
